Airfoil
Info
Manufactured
on custom equipment to hold extreme tolerances, our constant chord
airfoil stock features fully contoured top and bottom surfaces. All
of our airfoils are made of AAA balsa and basswood for maximum quality
and performance, and are available in various profiles and sizes
for specific model aviation applications.
The profiles we offer are based on popular airfoils
used in model aviation. The AG08 and the HT12 (developed by Mark
Drela) are available for glider applications, while the SG6042 (developed
by Michael Selig and Phillipe Giguerre) has been used with great
success as rotor blades on model autogyros. All of our airfoil profiles
have been slightly modified to increase the trailing edge thickness
to be approximately .015”, which makes them more robust for
modeling.
The drawings below provide a graphical representation of each airfoil
profile we offer.

SG6042 (Chord sizes: 1-1/2", 2", 2-3/8", 2-3/4")

AG08 (Chord size: 2-3/4")
HT12 (Chord size: 1-1/2")

In addition to the various profiles, AeroBalsa Airfoils are also
available in three types. Each type offers a unique advantage as
described below.
|
AeroLite Airfoils™
Our lightest airfoil. Perfect for plane and glider wings, this all-balsa version
is made of 4-6 lb. contest grade and has no basswood leading edge. Sold
individually.
|

|
HardEdge Airfoils™
These are also made of 4-6 lb. contest grade balsa, but include a 3/16" basswood
leading edge for added durability. Like our AeroLite
Aifoils™, they're excellent for plane, glider wings and indoor electric
autogyros. Sold
individually.
|

|
RotorBlade Airfoils™
For use with model Autogyros. The basswood leading edge is sized to aid in chordwise
balancing, which is critical for Autogyro rotor system performance. Sold
in sets of 4.

The AG08 is available with a 2 ¾” constant chord and
a thickness of approximately 6%. The HT12 is available with a 1 ½” constant
chord and a thickness of 5%. Both the AG08 and the HT12 are only
available as AeroLite Airfoils, which are made of contest grade,
4-6 lb. balsa. In addition to gliders, both of these airfoils are
perfect for small electric planes.
The SG6042 is available in four constant chord sizes: 1 1/2",
2", 2 3/8", and 2 3/4". The thickness is at 11%
of chord on all sizes. While the SG6042
is available in all 3 airfoil types as shown above, our RotorBlade
Airfoils™ are by far the most popular amongst autogyro
modelers.

All of our airfoils are constant chord and thickness. Various lengths
are available as listed on our order
page.
The profile of our airfoils is maintained to within .004"[0.10mm]
all around and along the entire length, and from one blank to the
next. This extreme level of precision means that the lift generated
at one end of the airfoil will match the lift generated at the other
end (assuming the same air speed and incidence), and from one airfoil
blank to the next. This characteristic is what makes our airfoils
perform as well as they do, and is just one of the features that
will make them an excellent choice for your model aircraft.
Accuracy, Precision, Consistency, Quality. That’s AeroBalsa
airfoils.
